As a Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), my perspective on the implications of equity-based funding is multi-faceted, not only concerning the recruitment and development of talent within nonprofits but also regarding the broader societal impact of such an approach.
Firstly, the shift towards equity-based funding has had a transformative effect on the types of projects that receive funding. In the past, grant-making was often guided by the interests of donors and their perception of what constituted a worthy cause. Today, however, there is an increasingly discerning eye towards projects that proactively seek to dismantle systemic barriers and promote social equity. This has meant that programs aiming to empower marginalized communities, enhance diversity and inclusion, and redress historical injustices are coming to the fore.
The evaluation criteria for successful grant applications have also evolved. Previously, the focus may have been on the scalability and sustainability of initiatives. While these factors remain important, the lenses through which they are viewed have changed. There is now greater emphasis on community involvement and buy-in, lived experiences of the target demographic, and the potential for catalyzing systemic change. This pivot demands that organizations seeking grants articulate not only what they plan to do but also how their work will contribute to the broader battle for social equity.
For grant-seeking organizations, aligning with this new paradigm involves introspection and potentially a recalibration of missions and project plans. Organizations must look inward to ensure they are embodying the principles of equity and inclusion they seek to advance. This might entail diversifying their boards, engaging with communities more deeply, and refining their approaches to measurement and evaluation to capture the nuances of social impact.
On the flip side, grantmakers are faced with the critical task of ensuring their efforts to promote systemic change do not inadvertently harm the sustainability of smaller nonprofits or stifle innovative initiatives. Grantmakers must strike a delicate balance—being both catalysts for equity and responsible stewards of their resources. It is essential that they build capacities, not dependencies, and facilitate collaborations that amplify impact without centralizing power.
