However, we are beginning to see patterns emerge. A growing number of foundations, government agencies, and corporate funders are asking questions about AI, developing frameworks, and setting expectations. Understanding these emerging perspectives helps you position your organization well.
The funder landscape on AI is evolving rapidly. Organizations that demonstrate thoughtful, transparent AI use now are positioning themselves as leaders. Organizations that use AI recklessly or hide it are taking significant reputational risk.
Across all funder types, the most consistent concern is authenticity. Funders invest in organizations, not in well-written proposals. They want to understand your unique approach, your values, and your theory of change. If a proposal is so polished and generic that it could be any nonprofit's proposal, funders notice. They want to hear your organization's actual voice—even if it's less perfect than AI could make it.
This doesn't mean proposals should be poorly written. It means they should sound like they came from your organization's leadership, not from a template or AI tool. Authenticity is increasingly valuable in a competitive funding landscape.
All funders expect factual accuracy. They may not know whether you used AI or not, but they expect every statistic, citation, and claim to be verifiable and correct. Funders in this space are increasingly asking about equity practices in all aspects of the organization, including how you write proposals.
Strategic implication: With government funders, transparency about responsible AI use is safest. If you used AI, have a clear answer about what you used it for and how you verified content. Hiding AI use risks discovery and penalty.

Nonprofit networks, affinity groups, and sector organizations are developing AI guidance for nonprofits. The Nonprofit Tech for Good, Candid, and other sector leaders are creating frameworks. As these become more standard, funders will reference them. Getting aligned with emerging standards now is strategic.
Funders are becoming more rigorous about verifying proposal accuracy. This isn't primarily about AI, but AI has raised awareness of accuracy issues. The bar for accuracy is rising, which benefits organizations with strong verification processes regardless of whether they use AI.
More funders are asking about equity in all aspects of nonprofit operations. How you develop proposals is fair game. An equity-focused nonprofit using AI without careful equity review may be asked about this by funders interested in consistency between stated values and practices.
As proposals become more commodified and easier to produce (via AI and templates), the organizations that stand out are those with genuine, deep relationships with funders. Funder officers can tell the difference between a proposal written by someone who knows the funder's priorities intimately versus one that's generic and AI-polished.
Assume that any major funder may develop an explicit AI policy within the next 2-3 years. Being ahead of this by demonstrating responsible AI use now positions you better than scrambling to change practices after a policy drops.
